Lesson aims: To introduce the concept of audience, how it is used in the games industry and start to identify how audience is used when crafting a game.

Game Genres (Categories)

A genre is a category of artistic, musical, or literary work characterized by a particular style, form, or content. Genres function as a way for both creators and audiences to classify creative works and manage expectations about their content and tone. The word "genre" comes from French and means "type" or "sort".

Task: Genre Analysis

Using your favourite game
- Identify the games Genre (check with your tutor if you are not sure what it is)
- List the games conventions (the aspects of the game that put it in that genre)
Right the genre and list in your blog
Compare the conventions with what you wrote about why this is your favourite game, are the conventions the reason and are their other games in the same genre you like.

Go back to your favourite game
Think about how you could change it to another genre to appeal to a different type of player, what would you need to change?
Write up what changes you would make on your blog to change it to a different genre that would appeal to a different type of player

Task: Creating a DLC

Using everything we have talked about in terms of audience appeal, please design a new expansion for your favourite game, please think about
- - - What will the goal of the DLC be?
    - What area will it take place in?
    - How will it connect to the main game?
    - What new characters, enemies and weapons/items will there be?
    - What will make fans of the main game want to play this DLC?
